Crab Masala Recipe

Crabs 6
Oil 2 tbsp
Bay leaves 2
Black peppercorns 3-4
Cloves 2
Green cardamoms 2
Onions 4-5
Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
Red chili powder 1 1/2 tsp
Green Masala:
Fresh coriander leaves 1/2 bunch
Green chilies 4-5
Grated ginger 2 tbsp
Grated garlic 2 tbsp
Cloves 2
Black peppercorns 6
Cinnamon 1/2 inch
Coconut Masala:
Oil 2 tbsp
Coriander seeds 1 tbsp
Black peppercorns 2
Cloves 2
Cinnamon 1 inch
Onion 1 medium
Grated fresh coconut 1 1/2 cups


Separate the claws and cut the crabs into two.
Wash and remove gills and stomach sac.
Crack the claws lightly.
Grind all the ingredients for the green masala with approximately one tablespoon of water to a fine paste.
For the coconut masala, heat two tablespoons of oil in a pan.
Add coriander seeds, peppercorns, cloves and cinnamon and sauté for two minutes.
Add onion and continue to sauté till onion turns pink.
Add the coconut and continue to sauté on very low heat till the coconut turns brown, make insure that it does not burn.
Cool and grind to a very fine paste with half a cup of water.
Heat two tablespoons of oil in a kadai.
Add bay leaves, peppercorns, cloves and green cardamoms, and sauté for two minutes.
Add the green masala and sauté till fragrant.
Add onions and saute till golden brown.
Add turmeric powder and chili powder and sauté for a couple of minutes more.
Add the crabs and mix well.
Add one cup of water and salt to taste, bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer till the crabs are cooked.
Stir in the coconut masala and half a cup of water.
When the gravy comes to a boil, remove from heat and leave to stand, covered, for about five minutes.
Eve hot with steamed rice or chapattis.
